Has anyone wondered why we put a tree up at Christmas time? The tradition was started by German Christians, bringing in trees to celebrate Christ’s birth. You can do your own research, but here's the basic reason why, are you ready? There are 3 trees significant trees in the Bible. Can you tell me what they are?
The Tree of Life
The Tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil
And the Cross
... cursed is anyone who dies on a tree...
Which is what Christ did for us.
It is my understanding, that the German Christians way back before Martin Luther's time, did plays depicting how these three trees impacted the world; how sin entered, destroying our relationship with God, cutting us off from eternal life (The Tree of Life) and leaving us in a need of a Saviour. They would use the evergreen trees because they symbolised everlasting life, which is what we have because of Jesus.
When these plays were outlawed, the Christians then brought the trees into their home. They would decorate them with fruit and sweets for their children to eat, and over time those were replaced with fake fruit... and then decorations.
Lights remind us, Jesus is the light of the world, and without Him, we would be in darkness.
Angels remind us of who delivered the good news... to Mary... Joseph... and the shepherds.
Stars, remind us of the one star that appeared to announce Jesus birth, and brought the wise men from afar.
So, if you wonder why we have 'Christmas Trees' this is why, the reminder of what Jesus came to do for us.
And that....
is something worth celebrating!
Merry Christmas everyone!
