Cinder: Book One of the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
I just finished listening to the audio book. This is a Fairytale
Si Fi fiction story. (non-Christian) but I found it very good!
It’s the story of Cinderella… with a twist, after all it’s
also si fi… so this girl name Cinder lives with her adopted mother and two
sisters. Cinder is a mechanic, but she’s also cyborg. Which means that she survived
from a horrible accident and part of her body has been replaced with computer
and robotic parts ish.
It’s a world of Androids (robots) and a very advanced civilization
in New Beijing. But there is a deadly plague that is spreading everywhere. And
the only antidote is on the moon and owned by an evil queen, earth’s enemy!
Oh yes and there’s the prince. Prince Kai. He comes to her mechanic
booth one day to get his childhood `friend’ Nancy the android repaired. There’s
a tiny bit of romantic interest. But Cinder is afraid to tell him about her not
so attractive computer side.
Marissa Meyer has an excellent way of weaving an intriguing
tale. I would rate it 4 ½ stars! The reason not 5, is because this is not a book for all ages. It is upper teens to adults. There is a few suggestive comments, but over
all it was a very clean book. There is also a lot of heated conversation
between Cinder and her adoptive mother and one of her sisters, as Cinder takes a
lot of verbal abuse from them, but she also spits it back. In her defense
though, no one should have to live with what she lived with and she did in a sense give
some respect to her mom until her trust with her was broken too much. There also was some lying.
Good themes however, were self sacrificing. Putting the good
of others first before ones self. Repaying evil with kindness. Also
standing up for the weak and what is right even when the costs are high.
The interesting thing about this book was the ending. It wasn’t
your `fall in love and live happily ever after’ story. Cinder saves the day in
a sense, but then is ….
Well I can’t say and spoil the story. It's a cliff hanger so that the next book can pick up the story.
Happy reading.
